Moodle: How to Import Question Bank Files

Steps to Import Question Bank Files into Moodle

Before importing question bank files, Instructors will need to upload the common cartridge (.imscc file) (See: How to Import a Common Cartridge into Moodle) and activate their Instructor Subscription.

 

Download Question Bank Files from the Online Instructor Resources

  1. Log in to your Moodle account.
     
  2. Open the course to which you would like to import question bank files.
     
  3. Select the Online Instructor Resources link.

     
  4. The Online Instructor Resources will open. Scroll down and click on the plus sign to expand the Assessment Software & Question Pools subheading. Then select the plus sign next to Moodle XML Format. Select the ZIP folder which will download to your local hard drive.

     
  5. The zip folder will save to your local hard drive. In preparation for importing the files into Moodle, extract the zip folder.

Import Question Bank Files into Moodle

  1. Select a course to import the exam files. Select the Gear/Settings icon and select More…

     
  2. Within the Course administration section, under Question bank, select Import.

     
  3. Under File format select Moodle XML format.

     
  4. Expand the General category. Select the drop-down menu next to Import category and make sure the Default course level category has been selected.

     
  5. Under the Import questions from file category, drag the XML file into the appropriate box, or select Choose a file…

     
  6. Select Choose File and find the _moodle.xml file downloaded from the Online Instructor Resources. Enter a name for the Question Bank file and select Upload this file.

     
  7. Once the .xml file appears, select Import.

     
  8. All questions will appear under the Import tab.
